Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start writing.
I am a fantasy author living life’s adventures with my Shepsky dog, Shadow, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I am also a gamer and cosplay enthusiast! Dreams definitely inspired me to start writing; my current series was inspired by them. When I was a teen, I felt that there were never enough vampire tales directed at my age (this was before the Twilight craze) and I knew I wanted to change that. That’s why my first series is directed mainly to young adults.
Tell us about your books.
I have two published novels so far: CHILD OF BLACKWEN and MISTRESS OF BLACKWEN. They are the first two of a YA fantasy coming of age series that could hold six novels. The main protagonist, Artemis Ravenwing, is an orphan dhampir (half-vampire and half-human) who grew up in a world of prejudice and eventually discovered the dark truth of her bloodline. She embarks on an adventure to correct the mistakes of the past with a quirky and interesting cast of characters, each of whom have their own troubles and craziness to add to the mix. I dreamt of these characters since I was 11 years old (I’m 26 now) and began writing their tale at 13.
How did you go about getting published?
I went the self-publishing route. It’s been an amazing journey since!
What is your writing process? Do you have a time, day or place you like to write?
My writing process changes every so often. Some days I write/edit for a couple of hours, some days I write/edit for an entire day. I use my kitchen table as my writing spot more than my own desk in my room. There are times that I will change the venue and head to a coffee shop or just take a blanket and sit around at the local park. I find that the early afternoon has been the most productive time for me to work. I always have to have music playing, and lately I have taken to being surrounded by Game of Thrones or Star Wars Funko Pop dolls while I write.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Full-time job, pets, hobbies?
I do have another job besides being an author. I do game, especially when writer’s block happens. I also cosplay! Link from Legend of Zelda is my most used cosplay. Spending time with my dog and catching some sports makes my day as well.
Any advice for authors about book covers?
Invest in it! Books are unfortunately judged by their cover. There are some great indie authors out there who don’t get the attention they deserve because of them.
Any marketing tips you’d like to share with other authors?
Social media is actually quite helpful. Goodreads is a great place to share your work as well as expanding your network. I’ve been successful in gaining new fans through the giveaways I’ve hosted on there.
What’s your favorite book?
I don’t have just one favorite book. It’s always been hard for me to choose just one. I do reread a lot of novels particularly by Sara Douglass, Isabel Allende, and Neil Gaiman. George R.R. Martin too.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading Hedge King in the Winter by Michael E. Dellert.
What’s your next book project?
I’m currently editing CHAMPIONS OF ARRYGN, book three of the Artemis Ravenwing novels. It’s a doozy of a ride, I can promise that. I also sneak some time to work on a novel in another series, SHADOW WALKER. While the Artemis Ravenwing novels are directed to the YA fantasy audience, the Shadow Walker series will be directed to the NA dark fantasy audience.
