If you want to make the world a better place… and you want to do work that matters by helping start or support a worthy organization, then Get the Grant, Change the World was written for YOU.
This book will show you how and where to apply for grants, and how to avoid wasting your time applying for grants you have no chance of getting. The tips in this book will make your job easier and your organization stronger – and help you get better funding to grow and sustain your mission.
Together, authors Marcia Whitney and Kirsten Stevens have raised and funded millions of grant dollars – and they’ll help you fast-track your grant by showing you what funders value most – and how to get your application to the top of the stack.
THIS BOOK WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO:
Distinguish Yourself – It’s essential to find ways to stand apart from the crowd so that your project or program gets noticed by a potential funder.
Tell a Good Story – How to tell the kind of story that touches the depths of your readers’ being, compels them to believe in your cause, and makes them want to support it.
Find the Best Grants – The only way to make sure that you’re applying to the right foundations and for appropriate grants is to DO THE RESEARCH – and to do it well.
Elevate Your Image – Presentation matters. No matter how impressive your organization or its work is, if it isn’t well presented, it won’t matter.
Build Relationships with Funders – Funders want to know as much as they can about applicants. They need to know and trust both your organization and the people who represent it so that they can confidently fund the right projects.
Show The Foundation You’re a Superhero – Be great as an organization. Show the world and your funders that you’re achieving your mission every day, and that your important vision is worth supporting.
If you’ve ever been intimidated by the idea of fundraising, or tried and failed at winning grants, this book will show you how anyone – with the right planning, research, and know-how – can make it happen. We’ll show you the key things you need to know to get the grant and change the world.

Marcia has dedicated 22+ years to fundraising for nonprofit organizations – as a staff member in different fields, a department head, a development director, an executive director, and a senior consultant. She is dedicated to the success of worthy organizations and believes that while their missions may vary, their ability to make a difference (especially with the partnership of the right funders) is universal.
The first grant Marcia ever helped write was a $160,000 grant for The Jane Goodall Institute. The grant was fully funded and allowed the organization to publish the Roots & Shoots environmental education materials that were distributed to thousands of teachers and young people around the globe, helping them to envision their ability to make a positive difference in the world through small, impactful projects benefiting people, animals, and the environment in their own communities.
A significant portion of Marcia’s fundraising efforts have focused on building mutually beneficial relationships with funders; identifying prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors; analyzing their potential and motivation to give; cultivating relationships with them; respectfully asking for their contributions; creatively showing appreciation for their generosity; and stewarding future gifts.
Kirsten was born in Panama and spent her youth in Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Mexico. Her early childhood memories of witnessing extreme poverty, hunger, homelessness, and discrimination resulting from vicious civil wars shaped what would later become her passion for social justice and ensuring that all lives are valued. Her belief system was built on what she determined was important on this earth: that all human beings are entitled to not only having their basic needs me, but also having quality of life.
Today Kirsten works with inspirational visionaries who have chosen to devote their lives to improve our world in some way. She finds fulfillment in standing side by side with those in our communities who have the courage and tenacity to pursue their passion to give back. She has been privileged to provide the support and guidance to nonprofit leaders who want to change lives and the world. She has helped launch nonprofits in The Bahamas as both a volunteer and a consultant, worked with foundations and charities as a director of development and executive director, and currently works as a consultant to nonprofits based in the U.S. and overseas.
The focus of her work with nonprofits has been in developing organizations from the ground up. She strives to build strong, lasting entities that can make significant change knowing that efficiency, excellence, and passion lead to sustained success.
