Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start writing.
I first became interested in writing after playing online roleplaying games where the way you played the game was through creative writing. You would write about what your character did and how they interacted with other players on the game. Since I have always been a gamer, I then looked at trying to make a career out of writing so I could combine my passion with my ability to pay the bills and became a video game journalist. After several years of that I transitioned into also writing books about gaming and the video game industry.
Tell us about your books.
I have written two books: Creating an Online Roleplaying Game and Nerd Psychology. Creating an Online Roleplaying Game is exactly what it sounds like. It is a book about how to create and manage your own online RPG, told from the perspective of someone that has been running his own successful RPG for over ten years. Nerd Psychology is a book about why online trolls, which I call nerds, act the way they do online. It explains the difference between a geek and a nerd. Trolls effect everybody who spends any measurable amount of time on the internet (which these days who doesn’t?) so it is applicable to the daily lives of pretty much everybody reading this interview.
How did you go about getting published?
I went with self publishing since I didn’t know much about the publishing process and it seemed easier. I learned a lot while self publishing and would recommend it for all new writers. The fact you keep a higher percentage of royalties when self publishing doesn’t hurt, either.
What is your writing process? Do you have a time, day or place you like to write?
Generally I just write whenever the mood strikes me and I have free time. I have a regular job too so I don’t get to write as much as I’d like, so usually my writing time is devoted to weekends these days. I have no set schedule or times though.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Full-time job, pets, hobbies?
Aside from working I like playing video games and reading. I’m a big fan of old school roleplaying games, especially the Final Fantasy series. I also am a huge lacrosse fan and have had Rochester Knighthawks season tickets since their inaugural season.
Any advice for authors about book covers?
Definitely get someone who is skilled in graphic design to help you. Book covers are your first impression on readers so you want to make it a good one.
Any marketing tips you’d like to share with other authors?
Join groups of like-minded writers that are interested in the genre you’re writing in. They can not only give feedback to your work that you can use to improve it, but also could lead to some sales, or at least intelligent reviews, once it’s completed.
What’s your favorite book?
Wizard and Glass by Stephen King
What are you reading now?
Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King
What’s your next book project?
My next book project is going to build off the Nerd Psychology concept but be politically aimed. I am thinking of naming the next book Liberal Psychology and then making it into a series with different themes.
