Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start writing.
I have always had a profound curiosity, for what motivates a person’s actions. That translates fairly easy to character development. I started imagining ideas for books at a very young age. I didn’t actually put pen to paper until I was a teenager. I’m inspired by random things almost daily. Haha I honestly have an enormous list of potential books I’d like to write!
Tell us about your books.
My first novel, Thy Daughter’s Enemies, actually began when I was sixteen. I loved the idea of having strong female characters that I could relate to. It’s change and evolved several times over the years, but I’m happy with the way it turned out. Now, I hope to give other young girls strong female characters they can relate to! The Sapphire Star Saga is set in the fictional world of Watreon. I have my heroines traipsing across their lands, battling enemies and discovering secrets. All while trying to figure out who their are and how they fit into their world. I plan on having five books total in the series.
How did you go about getting published?
I submitted my manuscript to a publishing house and waited. And waited. And waited. Then was rejected. I know that many successful authors were rejected several times by traditional print publishers, but I knew that repeating that process would drive me crazy. So after extensive research, I decided Smashwords was the right place for me to self-publish as an ebook. I’m happy with the decision and success I’ve had so far!
What is your writing process? Do you have a time, day or place you like to write?
Oh gosh, I wish that I could say I have a specific place or hours that I set aside for writing. The reality is, I have two special needs children. They require A LOT of care and take up a significant amount of my time. So my writing desk is anywhere I can set my laptop and steal a few moments to write. Every now and then I will have a whole day to myself, and then I usually spend hours writing. As for a process, haha I am not very organized. I try to be! I have pages and pages of handwritten backstory and character development, that are strewn about my house! I do like to create an outline before I get started on a new piece. Just so I have a reference of the general flow and direction I want it to go.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing? Full-time job, pets, hobbies?
My first priority is being a mother. It’s one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have ever done. I love photography and take jobs when I can. I recently started working towards getting my degree. It is strange being a student again. I spend a lot of time with my family, which is growing exponentially right now. When I have time I love to get on Wattpad and chat with other authors. Whether they are emerging or seasoned writers, I always find something entertaining to read.
Any advice for authors about book covers?
Unless you are a professional (or perhaps really knowledgeable with photoshop) DON’T create your own cover! A good cover is worth the investment.
Any marketing tips you’d like to share with other authors?
I have come to realize that you either have a knack for marketing, or you don’t. I’m not that great at self marketing. Getting better, but not great. If you are lucky enough to have that talent then I applaud you haha.
What’s your favorite book?
This is honestly one of my least favorite questions to be asked. I have been an avid reader since a very young age. There are just too many to list! It also depends on my mood.
What are you reading now?
I just finished Witch Song by Amber Argyle. I’ve been trying to support other self published indie authors.
What’s your next book project?
I’m finishing up Gilded Moon, the second installment of The Sapphire Star Saga. Then I will start on the third book in the series. I also have a developing story on Wattpad, called Unity Commanded. It’s much different from the fantasy novels I’ve been writing. It’s a dystopian novel set 52 years after another American Civil War.
